| 概要 | BACKGROUND: A 2011 US study showed that 99% of people with Down Syndrome (DS) are happy with their lives. With increasing maternal age and expanding prenatal testing in Japan, understanding DS self-perception has become crucial for informed decision-making.METHODS: We surveyed Japan Down Syndrome Society members aged $\ge$ 12 years (n = 300) between October and November 2015 to evaluate their self-perceptions and compare them with the US data.RESULTS: Out of 96 responses (32% response rate), 76 respondents (97%) agreed they are happy with their lives, showing that most individuals with DS in Japan view themselves and their lives positively, consistent with the US study.CONCLUSION: Most individuals with DS in Japan feel positive about their lives. These findings provide realistic insights into life with DS, serving as a valuable resource in genetic counseling for couples considering prenatal tests or parents raising children with DS. |
