概要	AIM: This study evaluated whether patient education and physician knowledge of second-trimester maternal serum screening (MSS) are insufficient to provide adequate prenatal screening information in Japan. METHODS: In-person or telephone interviews were conducted with medical personnel at 25 medical facilities utilizing Afp(4) second-trimester screening to explore how information about the MSS process was provided to pregnant women. RESULTS: Before testing, 60% of facilities spent less than 5 minutes explaining the MSS process. While nearly all facilities explained amniocentesis for chromosomal aneuploidy, only 60% explained its associated risks. Ultrasound for open neural tube defects was explained at half of the facilities, and only 20% of practitioners explained the possibility of other fetal congenital disorders. CONCLUSION: Most obstetricians in Japan do not provide patients with sufficient information regarding MSS.
